Physican Referrals Intraocular Lens Power Measurements
Frequently, patients are referred to East Valley Ophthalmology by other
surgeons for intraocular lens power calculations prior to various forms of
eye surgery. If you have been referred to our office for this service it is because there may be something atypical about your eyes that makes standard methods of taking these measurements unreliable, or intraocular lens power calculations difficult.
Some examples of such conditions are:
-
Variable axial length readings.
-
An inability to obtain axial length readings.
-
Significant difference between right and left eye measurements.
-
Prior keratorefractive surgery (RK, PRK or LASIK).
-
Prior retinal detachment with, or without, a scleral buckle.
-
Eyes containing silicone oil.
-
Eyes that are very farsighted or very nearsighted.
-
Prior ocular trauma.
-
Mature cataracts, with no view of the back of the eye.
Dr. Hill has specialized in intraocular lens power calculations for these
unusual situations for many years. If you have been sent to us by another
physician:
-
Your eyes will be measured using the latest advancements in technology.
-
The IOL power calculations will be carried out by Dr. Hill personally.
-
A detailed report will be sent to your referring physician with copies of all data.
Our standard fee for this service applies. If we have an existing contract
with your insurance company, the standard co-pay and/or deductible will
apply.
However, the majority of the time we will not have a pre-existing contract
with your health plan. If this is the case, our intraocular lens power
calculation services are typically not covered and you will be asked to pay
the full amount at the time of your visit.
It is helpful to keep in mind that health plans typically base their
contracted reimbursement schedules on routine procedures and discounted
fees. This would not apply to the intraocular lens power calculation
services provided by Dr. Hill, as none of our services in this area are
provided in a routine setting.
For intraocular lens power calculations, Dr. Hill only sees patients when
asked to do so by other physicians. And this is only when the measurements
are either technically too difficult, or the intraocular lens power
calculations mathematically too complex to be carried out by a general
ophthalmologist.
Our office is happy to send information to your insurance company, but we do
not work for your insurance company, we work for you. And our relationship
is with you the patient, not your health plan. If your health plan feels
that such a high level of specialization is not necessary, that is to say
one of their own physicians is qualified to provide these services, then
this needs to be addressed by you with your insurance company and/or your
referring physician prior to your visit with us.

services, you are welcome to contact our Practice Administrator: Lynne Ebsen
