DATA EXPORT and IMPORT

Until Version V 3.0, the serial interface could only be used to export both the patient data and the individual measured values, including the graphs and one selected calculated IOL, to an office management system. In the V 3.0 an additional mode (Program Settings via Setup) is available which allows the transfer of all calculated lenses for the two eyes for all 5 biometry formulas. This makes it possible to forgo printout on the IOL Master in favor of data transfer to the office management system, permitting paperless work.
Data export to office management systems can only be implemented by
the supplier of such systems. It is vital that all safety requirements
are met per DIN EN 60601-1-1 (medical electrical systems). Please
contact the supplier to determine whether these safety requirements
are being met.
For data export to a connected personal computer with a Windows
operating system (Windows 95/98/2000/NT/ME), Zeiss supplies the
corresponding accessories. These include a serial cable (null modem,
female/female connector) and software (on CD-ROM) to be installed on
the PC. Data is stored to a database on the PC. From there, data may
be exported to other file formats. The graphs of axial length
measurements are made available in JPEG format.
Before the export of data, select the export mode
appropriate for the connected office management system, via
Options > Setup > Program Settings.
For data export to an office management system or PC:

Press the S key.
Software Option A
Data may be exported to a connected office management system, personal computer or diskette. Two types of data protocols are selectable under Setup > Program Settings > Send Data to PMS. Data is transmitted through the serial cable to the connected PC.
"Old", in addition to patient data and measured values, only exports one previously calculated and selected IOL.
"New", additionally exports all previously calculated IOL's for both eyes for all five biometric formulas.
With the
Software Option A, instead of an office management system, a PC with Windows95/98/2000/NT/ME operating system may be connected. Zeiss software package (Software Option B) on CD-ROM for the PC allows you to save stored data to a database. From there, it is also possible to export the graphs in JPG format.
Note regarding data export to a PC:
- The PC must be switched on, and the IOL Master running the
software.
- The export progress bar must be visible on the screen of the
IOL Master.
- Data can then be archived on the PC or processed appropriately.
For data export to diskette:
Click on the corresponding button or
Press the X key.
This function allows selected patient data and measured values to be exported
to a diskette. Particularly users who wish to compile their own scientific papers
or lectures, using their clinical results, need to use the patient data (measured
values, but without graphs) for their own evaluations. The function for data
export to disk is precisely for this purpose.
Select the desired data via Options > Setup > Program Settings > Export. You can then transfer the data to your PC and process them using an appropriate application (e.g., "MS Excel"). Data is made available in a text file (IOLMexport.csv) for archiving and data analysis.
If you
use the data for further processing by other applications (e.g., MS Excel"),
be sure to regularly check the data for any loss or corruption of data caused
by import to these applications.
Import
Software Option A
The Import function found in Software Option A allows you to import data from diskette to the IOL Master. During the initial startup of an IOL Master system, IOL constants must be entered in the user manager for optical biometry. If you do not have these constants in your possession, the use of the clinical data of the User Group for Laser Interference Biometry (ULIB) has proven to be a favorable solution. If an appropriate database is available on disk, this data can be imported into the system during the initial installation and allocated to each user. Individual IOL's can be subsequently added in this way.

A cortical cataract, which forms in the lens cortex, gradually extends its spokes from the outside of the lens to the center. Many diabetics develop cortical cataracts. A sub-capsular cataract begins at the back of the lens. People with diabetes, high farsightedness, retinitis pigmentosa or those taking high doses of steroids may develop a sub-capsular cataract. Cataract symptoms cataract starts out small, and at first has little effect on your vision. You may notice that your vision is blurred a little, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass or viewing an impressionist painting. A cataract may make light from the sun or a lamp seem too bright or glaring. Or you may notice when you drive at night that the oncoming headlights cause more glare than before. Colors may not appear as bright as they once did. The type of cataract you have will affect exactly which symptoms you experience and how soon they will occur. When a nuclear cataract first develops it can bring about a temporary improvement in your near vision, called second sight. Unfortunately, the improved vision is short-lived and will disappear as the cataract worsens. Meanwhile, a sub-capsular cataract may not produce any symptoms until it's well developed. If you think you have a cataract, see an eye doctor for an exam to find out for sure. What causes a cataract? No one knows for sure why the eye's lens changes as we age, forming cataracts. Researchers are gradually identifying factors that may cause cataracts — and information that may help to prevent them. Many studies suggest that exposure to ultravlens implantet light is associated with cataract development, so eye care practitioners recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to lessen your exposure. Other types of radiation may also be causes. For example, a 2005 study conducted in Iceland suggests that airline pilots have a higher risk of developing nuclear cataract than non-pilots, and that the cause may be exposure to cosmic radiation. A similar theory suggests that astronauts, too, are at risk from cosmic radiation. Other studies suggest people with diabetes are at risk for developing a cataract. The same goes for users of steroids, diuretics and major tranquilizers, but more studies are needed to distinguish the effect of the disease from the consequences of the drugs themselves. Some eye care practitioners believe that a diet high in antioxidants, such as beta-carotene (vitamin a), selenium and vitamins c and e, may forestall cataract development. Meanwhile, eating a lot of salt may increase your risk. Other risk factors include cigarette smoke, air pollution and heavy alcohol consumption. A small study published in 2002 found lead exposure to be a risk factor; another study in December 2004, of 795 men age 60 and older, came to a similar conclusion. But larger studies are needed to confirm whether lead can definitely put you at risk, and if so, whether the risk is from a one-time dose at a particular time in life or from chronic exposure over years. Cataract treatment when symptoms begin to appear, you may be able to improve your vision for a while using new glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids. Think about surgery when your cataracts have progressed enough to seriously impair your vision and affect your daily life.
